My problem with IT people, Part I
They complain that the rest of the staff doesn't understand anything about technology, yet they do everything in their power to restrict access to it.

Knowledge is power! If everyone knew how to do it, no more need for IT people. The harness maker and the blacksmith used to think they were pretty important too.
EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY.
in my experience IT people want to control everything as much as possible so that users cannot wreck things. In Louis Freeh's book, he details how one of the best computer programmers in the world went to work for the FBI where he was updating all of their serverside programming to make it more useable for the future. The project was completely scrapped because some higher ups didnt like how their desktop looked.
First of all, not all of us are familiar with Louis Freeh's book.
Second of all, if they were sooooo good at what they did, why couldn't those programmers make the user interface more friendly? Or better explain why it had to look the way it did to function better? I guarantee they just whined that the higher ups were too stupid to get it and effectively ran their own project into the ground.
