¡Dios mío!
I did it! I read Spanish on my own!
Arlington sends out a little monthly newspaper to all its residents and on the back page there are usually a couple of articles in español. The headline of one grabbed me because I could actually understand it, so I decided to try reading it.
I am happy to announce that I was able to read almost the entire thing, except for a few words. I can tell you what the article was about anyway (prenatal care and the WIC program). I can't believe it, I'm really getting there!
Arabic, on the other hand... that is definitely proving to be MUCH more difficult. I tried saying "How are you?" to an Arabic-speaking friend ("Kai-eeffa haalek," or so I thought) and he had absolutely NO idea what I was saying. None.

I learned a new spanish phrase the other day, from all the news headlines...and I, too, am quite excited. I've taken to having it be my response to annoying questions like "Do you like Ohio State?" (It's college football season, fyi...).
Do I LIKE Ohio State? There's only one reply for that:
No soy gay.
I did it! I'm a sailor! I sail! I'm a sailor! I sail!
