Weird weather

It has been raining a lot the past couple of days here in DC. Last night at about 8:30 the world's longest thunderstorm hit. In all my life I haven't seen and heard lightning and thunder that lasted for four hours. Usually it's a squall that goes through in no longer than half an hour, but last night it just wouldn't quit.

Mindy was over at my house watching a movie when it started to rain. It was downpouring so heavily that the street almost immediately became a fast-moving river. It was strangely... tempting. We decided it was necessary for us to go play in it a little bit. We were completely soaked in the first 10 seconds, but it was warm rain and felt really good, and it was just kind of fun to stand in the water while it rushed around our feet.

At the end of my street, though, is Washington Boulevard, and apparently it became a gully because they closed it due to flooding last night. Then this morning there were a couple of metro stations with tracks under water, so I had to get off the train early and walk like 20 blocks to work (which didn't kill me, but did cause me to sweat through my shirt. Let's just say we're not experiencing a dry heat). Part of the beltway around the city was closed in Alexandria because of a mud slide. Some cars were abandoned in tunnels when they filled with water. Northern Virginia was practically paralyzed, it was ridiculous. My commute took almost two hours, and I live less than 5 miles from my office. It took a coworker 3 hours. Wish you lived here?

I bet you do, cos guess what, it's raining again.

Weren't you living here when Hurricane Isabel hit back in '03? THAT was a storm :)

Is that the local storm to which all other storms are compared? In South Dakota it's always the Winter of '79. Now THAT was a storm:)

Can you send some back home, we could use it at my place.

Bah -- in my day ('89) we had real hurricanes. Hugo made my folks' neighborhood unrecognizable. Isabelle was just a long thunderstorm.

And it snowed uphill both ways, too.
